Trying to make my blog pretty

This blogging business is quite frustrating to me. I feel like despite my best efforts, my blog does not give off the appearance I'd like it to. I have this whole idea of how it should look and feel and how great it could be, but I feel like a blog handicap. The other day I tried to make my own header again and background and followed all the instructions online,but it just wouldn't work, dangit! So since I couldn't make it work, I gave up and thought I would just put on a generic background for now and call it good, only now I have issues again with the header. If this blog were a piece of paper, you would know how frustrated I was by the work because you would see scribbles and hard lines all over the sheet. You'd know it was a definite disappointing  fail. One of these days though, I will figure it out and have exactly what I want and you will all be like, "Oh, okay, she does have some taste. This blog actually looks put together for once!". It will happen I say, it will! I just don't know when... sigh.
